A Day in the Autumnal Country side, South Africa.

We gave Derek’s father a lift into the country where he met up with his sister. While we traveled I experienced the landscape as a poem:

As we traveled in the countryside
I began to see the autumnal earth
and her layers of her farmlands
as many different fabrics,
a layered patchwork skirt
some ploughed to a velvety tan
while others lay fallow
in their drab beige state.
The hills became her grass-green jersey
with bright canola yellow splashes
while dark green trees
buttoned their way up the profile of one specific hill.
The mountain sat with her flimsy grey chiffon scarf
hanging about her neck
and upon her head she wore a wide brim hat
of variegated white nubby cirrus clouds and crisp clear blue sky.
The Earth awaits her Winter.

It was a pleasant time and a welcome relief from all the stresses of work. I didn’t take any photos of this landscape which is why a poem formed in my mind, to remember her by. Eventually we stopped and walked around a small town and refreshed ourselves.

This is a view from the Drosdy in Swellendam, Western Cape.

And that is it for this week, take care and have a lovely weekend.

    • Thank you Ashley, it felt like the poem was flowing while we were driving, then afterwards I had to recapture it and I am not sure if I have it down as nicely the second time around. πŸ˜‚ But I often think of the farmlands and wilderness as fabrics, you are right probably because of my sewing background πŸ‘πŸ˜ƒ

  1. Love your poem Morag … it’s true, the signs are here that earth is awaiting winter. And Swellendam is such a beautiful place – you’ve managed to take lovely photo’s of this town (the third oldest in South Africa) πŸ‘πŸ».
