These are some interesting facts that happened in the year I was born.
The following facts are from…
South Africa:
The Rivonia Trial took place in the apartheid-era South Africa beginning in 1963 until almost a year later in 1964. This was about a group of anti-apartheid activists on Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia. It was a secret place for meetings of uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the newly-formed armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). The trial led to the imprisonment of the now world famous Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Ahmed Kathrada, Denis Goldberg, Raymond Mhlaba, Elias Motsoaledi, Andrew Mlangeni. Many were convicted of sabotage and sentenced to life.
In this year a voluntary arms embargo of South Africa was called by United Nations Security Council. Both Mauritius and Cameroon barred South Africa and Portugal from their sea- and airports.
India:
India’s first ever rocket was launched.
UK:
BBC, Wales, Doctor Who was first produced and filmed.
The rise of the Beatles (yay, I love the Beatles)
Profumo affair (Oops)
This year was pivotal to the modern Civil Rights Movement.
USA :
Often remembered as the year of the March on Washington and J.F.Kennedy shooting.
Scotland :
In Scotland blizzards buried villages and farm animals died in droves. It was called “Big Freeze of 1963” or ‘the winter to end all winters’. The roads and railways were put out of action and phone lines went down; all when people needed them most. Temperatures in Scotland dipped to near -30C. This information
So there you have it, a smattering of facts that happened in 1963, the year I was born.
Wishing all 1963 babies a very good year and all of you who have a birthday in January, may you have a wonderful month and especially if you were born on the same day as me, you are my twin.
Have a great weekend

I’ve not done the research but there were many things started in 1950 that I did come to know later. One was the radio programme “Life with the Lyons”, a sitcom with Bebe Daniels & Ben Lyons; Americans living in England. I might read more into that than I should! 🤗🙋♂️

All the best to you and those born in 1963.
You have compiled interesting facts of various countries including India, which had a turbulent time then. There was a war with China in 1962 and another with Pakistan in 1965.

Wow, thank you for adding interest to the facts. Sounds like a turbulent time indeed. I am sure you would construct a very comprehensive and interesting summary of world facts for the year you were born… Or any other year for that matter. 😉💐

I was just a wee lad of 4, so I remember very little. But I do remember a great sadness with my mother that year, the JFK assassination, my mother grieving with the nation.
Thanks for putting that list together.

You are welcome. It was quite interesting as I was unaware of the history of that particular year…. A wee lad of four? It’s quite something to remember one’s parent’s emotions at that age. I do remember Neil Armstrong landing on the moon when I was 6 but I think that’s because I shared his surname so everyone asked me if I was related to him 🤣

I was born 3 months earlier than you— actually I was supposed to be a January baby but I was in a hurry to meet my mother.
That year and month, the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962. Oh my! Of course I don’t remember that…
Happy belated birthday to you. 💕 🎂
