Last week I was notified by WordPress that I have received 500 followers. WOW! Who would have guessed? When I started out blogging my aim was to improve my writing because I wanted to write a book. I had not, originally imagined that others would read my blog posts. At that point in time I thought blogging was a bit like adding my posts to a glorified filing cabinet where I was stashing my thoughts away.

Nowadays I enjoy communicating with everyone and I want to thank you all for your interest and participation in my posts. I enjoy reading the wide variety of all your posts too. Each one of you adds richness to the fiber of my ‘cloth.’ To honor my followers I extend an invitation to you.

An Invitation

As it is almost impossible to have a party to celebrate I thought I would like to invite each of you to tell me something about who you are, besides being a blogger. Maybe how you started out on your career; then if you are a little older what career you do now and if you are even older what hobbies or charities or interests you have apart from your career. Or maybe you would like to share how many careers you have had or what career you would have preferred; it is your choice. Let the party begin.

I will start with my careers

When I left school I thought I wanted to be a teacher or a psychologist or an artist. I couldn’t make up my mind so I worked as a teacher-aid and housemother at a deaf school and after a term I decided I was not cut out for teaching children. I then, out of desperation, studied to be a secretary which I did not enjoy but at one of my secretarial job interviews I was offered a completely different position: they decided because my subjects at school were math, art and geography I would do well in their cartography department. You might be asking “what is a cartographer?” And I will answer: (since many people ask this) “cartography is not photography, although they both use the printing process; cartography is the making and drawing of maps.” I enjoyed it very much because I like using both my mind and hands in a topic I enjoyed – nature and geography; I enjoyed the solitude of the job; I got to support my husband during his two final years at University and most of all I managed to study art, fashion, history and sew to my heart’s content.

When I had children I stopped working but once they grew up I went and studied psychology and counseling and qualified as a counselor, using art as my preferred method of self exploration and expression with others. So you can see I had come full circle and married art and people together. In recent years I have enriched life with passion-hobbyhorse-altruistic interest (if there is such a label) is environmentalism – making the earth a better place for people and all living forms. So at the age of 58 that is where I am at. Who knows where I will be in 10 years time, literally and figuratively.

Now it is your turn if you would like to accept the invitation. Consider yourself welcome, at my party, to answer in the comments below or post a blog on your site if you like, just please link me to your blog so that I can get to read it because I am really interested.

Have a wonderful weekend

  2. What a life! A cartographer! That I would have liked to do as it might help me now! I have often looked up and thought that I don’t recognise this place, this place I thought I knew! But that is a different story, not for here! Congratulations on getting to 500! Keep well and safe.

      • I have been learning Korean, mostly. I do Italian here and there for fun because (knowing Spanish) I pick it up pretty easily. It’s fun! πŸ™‚

Being a homemaker is wonderful! I never thought I’d enjoy it this much, but I do 😊

      • I can imagine that Spanish and Italian could be similar. I tried to learn a little Spanish for our holiday but I definitely couldn’t hold a conversation. My daughter who had learned Latin understood more than I did. πŸ€£πŸ˜…

Yes I agree being a homemaker is wonderful… I think for me I always have mire ideas than is humanly possible to do, so I am never board 😊

  4. Congratulations!!!! I am close! I stayed at home with my kids for several years, also went back to college and received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. It was while in college that I realized how much I loved to write and was praised for several papers and projects I did. My English professor really encouraged me to write also. After staying at home for a few years due to a medical diagnose and God continuing to speak to me about writing, I decided that it was time. I decided that a blog was a great way to start.
Here is my most recent blog post; https://heartshare.blog/2021/03/22/the-great-offense/.
God bless you in all of your future endeavors!

  5. What a wonderful achievement Morag – congratulations on achieving 500 followers πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ … that certainly calls for a party!
I can absolutely see you as a counselor (just reading your posts, puts me in a calm state of mind!)

I started my career out as the local typist of a diamond mine … and within a few months, I was sent over to the local newspaper office where I was appointed as the editor/writer of this newspaper (‘Rondom-Ons’, meaning ‘Around Us’ in English). During this time, I’ve also became the local tour guide on the diamond mine … I think they’ve realised that I can talk quite a lot πŸ˜ƒ.
We then moved to Cape Town and I completely changed my career – becoming a logistical manager for an export company of poultry feeding equipment … and may I add, 9 very stressful years!
But every job prepares you for the next one I believe … and my last job was that of Patient Experience Officer (another name for Public Relations) at a big private hospital – again spending plenty of time with patients, families, well in general just a lot of people 😲.
After 11 years of emotion-packed days, I’ve needed a break … my husband and I travelled a bit, but currently we’re just enjoying some quiet time – well deserved, I would say πŸ˜‰.

Thanks Morag for being such an inspirational blogger … now we can have that cake that goes with a party … 🍰.

  7. This is such a wonderful achievement, congratulations! I am very intrigued with your work and career history, so interesting. I am in the middle of changing my career and trying to explain might be a blog on its own πŸ™‚ I am a business owner (or should say was, unfortunately close since March 2020) working with individuals and in the family services industry. I was previously in the banking environment for 20 years and might have to go back this route. The time running my business I completed my BBA and Psychology Honours, hoping to do Masters to practice in the Psychology field.
