It is time to give you another update on our home renovations. Progress has been slow and consistent, as I mentioned before Derek works mostly on the weekends; although we have made weekly trips recently too.
The three chimneys are down, leaving one for our fireplace in the lounge. This has made more space for the passage way. Derek taught himself how to plaster. After doing some brickwork to close up holes in the walls he practiced their plastering. Derek’s precision was put into practice as one can see that what he did is perfectly true, straight and with 90 degree angles. He says he’s leaving the top layer of plastering for the professionals. I quite like the look in the fireplace… It looks… Shall we say a little rustic.
We had to take the deadening out from between the rafters without standing on the ceiling. (I hope the video will show what I mean). It was a delicate process. We had a laborer lifting out the bulk of the deadening, then Derek swept up the big bits while I vacuumed the rest out. Afterwards Derek made new wooden boards to put back over the rafters.
It is now ready for the insulation, thermal heating and floor boards. The debate is still out as to whether we reuse the old wooden flooring or get new flooring. We know we are keeping the wood for the bottom floor so my thought is that it might be nice to keep it all looking the same, using the authentic old floors but we may not have enough as some of the timber got wrecked.
In the next video Derek will explain how he cut holes in the ceiling for down lights. We are ready for the electrician who is coming on Monday.
We have a plumber coming soon to do our plumbing upstairs and take out all the old lead pipes and replace them with copper ones.
I have included another montage video of all the ups and downs of renovation.
Getting the beam down was the most stressful part for me because I worry about almost everything, and safety is high up on the worry list. Having said that, Derek did manage to squash his ring finger in a hinge and it is likely that his nail will come off at some point. He is lucky he didn’t loose the tip of his finger. He has decided that wearing builder’s gloves at all times is a sensible idea.
The architect has given us a realistic idea of when we might expect to move in, which is around January. I had hoped we would move in by Christmas but we will have many years to look forward to in the future.
I hope to keep you up to date with another post before the end of the year.
Take care

It’s a lot of work! We’ll done to you both!

Thank you, πββοΈπ€we did not realize how much we’d undertake… I might have been deterred but so long as it’s cozy and warm and inviting, that’s what matters to me… A place that is home where I can get on with all my creative activities and we can have friends to stay in time… That is what matters. ππββοΈ

I can only sympathize, Morag, having been through many renovations when changing houses! But of course, once is finished, it will be just pure happiness sitting in two opposite armchairs by the sparkling fire in your fireplace with a drink or two!
Thank you, Morag, for the visual update!

Thank you for your wishes, and the finger will get better. Hopefully there will be no more accidents. It does give us immense satisfaction. We hope to stay there until we die, it’s a very nice community. We hope to make a new life there, being involved. πββοΈππ
