Social Media

Every time we interact with another person at work, we have a choice to make: do we try to claim as much value as we can, or contribute value without worrying about what we receive in return?
Adam Grant

I would like to apply this quote of Adam Grant to our personal situation, not at work, but in the realms of social media. “Every time we interact with another person on social media, we have a choice to make: do we try to claim as much value or worth as we can, or contribute value and worth without worrying about what we receive in return?” Emboldened words, mine.

When we post or message….

  • #Do we seek to affirmation ourselves or try to affirm, comfort, encourage the Other?
  • #Do we seek to gain or to give?
  • #Do we show off our intelligence and make ourselves look great or share our understanding and wisdom so that others might grow?
  • #Do we whine about our victumhood or ration out our vulnerability?
  • #Do we teach because we want to shame other’s and point to their faults or do we want to generously showcase our own mistakes so that others can learn from how we owned and grew through them?
  • #in a nutshell “do we try to claim as much value as we can or contribute value without worrying about what we receive in return?

I want to be mindful of this as I share on my blog and posts which why I regularly question why I blog. I want to do more good than harm. I want to be part of a health-giving world.

Take good care of yourselves and Others.

  1. A lot of what I write is from experiences I have had. Some of them have been good experiences, some sad or difficult ones. But the thing I learned is there is almost always at least one person if not more who can identify with what I am writing, or have experienced. I want to share my stories in the hopes that I show others that making a mistake is not a condemnation but a learning lesson. I want to share what will uplift, stimulate understanding, a sense of humor, curiosity, interaction with me or my post. I love sharing with others to make a smile happen or an “aha” moment. Thank you, my dear friend.

  2. Love this, Morag! You’re absolutely right our social media interactions can be a choice between seeking validation or spreading value.

I’m so with you on wanting to do more good than harm and create a positive online community. You’re already making a difference with your blog and posts, and I’m sure your thoughtfulness will inspire others to do the same. 😀🙌

  3. Thank you for sharing Adam Grant’s beautiful quote and questions that cross your mind while interacting with social media. I think you reflect others’ views as well. So far as I’m concerned, I certainly learn a lot from others’ posts. I have already written in one of my posts that I write primarily for “Swantah Sukhay”, I.e. for my own pleasure. If someone learns something or get inspired, it will be the icing on the cake.

  4. Thank you for your thought-provoking reflections which have helped me examine my conscience and the way I do things. I try to share good and positive things with others, but I also like to show my weaknesses and mistakes and also air my doubts so that I can be advised, encouraged and helped, therefore hopefully putting me in a position where I may be able to help others too.
