I moved to Scotland one year and one month ago and so this is my second autumn. Autumn in Scotland last year, being my first autumn in the northern hemisphere, was truly magical. This year I have honestly been quite busy but not distracted. The “magic” has been quite different. While last year I was largely an observer a) because I was immobile and recovering from ankle surgery and b) because I was new to Scotland, this year I have been more involved. I have done a lot of walking and exploring and I am slowly getting to know the people in my vicinity. This has given me an opportunity to experience the land and people in a new and involved way; and this has been magical too. It has been an active and interactive type of observing.
Last week we went for a walk, looking for elderberries, rose-hips and brambles. After gathering them I made a mixed berry syrup for coughs, colds and other viruses. Elderberries syrups, teas and vinegars are very good as for ones health but remember you can’t eat elderberries raw; they need to be cooked. I am not going to go into the properties, benefits and warnings of elderberries as I am new to them myself. It would be better for you to find some author who has had experience in these things.
Here is my short montage-video of my walk and making the syrup.
What interesting things have you been up to?
Take care, sending you a warm smile.

Thank you, Morag, for reminding me of the happy times of going up the mountains
with blueberry and mushroom picking. Now, I grow many things in my organic, wildlife garden, including the elderberry!

I’ve never heard of Elderberries. I do not think we have them here. They sound like a healthy snack. How do they taste?

Thank you so much for your wishes. Elderberries are tart or sour, maybe a bit like a green apple but they are mildly poisonous if eaten raw. It makes a nice tea. I think it would be very nice in baking as well. They are very healthy. New studies show that they have the capacity to block the pathways of viruses. Quite interesting.

I’ve just seen their benefits. That’s why I was wondering how come I’ve never heard of them before. Enjoy them on my behalf and welcome.

Ahhh yes, maybe it grows in a cold climate. It would be interesting to find out if they export them. The berries are quite tiny. Maybe smaller than a current, more like a pepper corn. You have raised a very interesting question. πββοΈπ

I’ve seen similar berries here but I’m sure they are not the ones. This one’s we eat on the go, no boiling and they have a sweet tender taste.
Yes, they must be growing in a colder place. π
