1969

What major historical events do you remember?

Neil Armstrong landed on the moon (major world event)

A major earthquake ripped through the Cape and shook our walls and windows so that things fell and cracks appeared while my mother and I and 5 kittens retreated to our car

My father (Welwood Armstrong) died just before the earthquake in 1969 – a major personal historical event

I remember all 3 events

I was 6 when these things happened

I wondered if Neil was a relative

I wondered if our house would fall down around us

I wondered if my dad was really dead or if he left us and one day would come back

Today

I don’t know if Neil is a relative, but he could be

Our house is still standing and is 130 years old but we don’t live there anymore.

I know my father passed but our relationship still continues

Just a quick response to a writing prompt.

Take care

    • Yes I agree it is fascinating… such a long time ago now 😂 although I went to a local archeological talk last week about a local dig in Peebles. They uncovered artefacts from 3000 years ago 😲😲 bronze age. That’s truly old ☺️

  1. Your personal experiences are woven so vividly with a major world event like Neil Armstrong’s moon landing. It’s poignant how you reflect on the uncertainty and wonder of a 6-year-old’s perspective. Your story beautifully captures the complexity of childhood memories and the lasting impact of significant events, both global and personal. The way you describe your relationship with your father continuing beyond his passing is especially touching ❤️. Thanks for sharing this heartfelt reflection!
