Time for a change

Anyone who drives a manual car will understand it becomes obvious when it’s time to change gears. When one is a learner driver it might happen that the gears are revving high before the learner realizes it’s time to change. And sometimes in life we keep going in high revs because we are not attuned to the signals of change.

As I settled into my new abode last week I “heard the signal” to check in with myself. It is an appropriate time to stop and listen as we are in an in-between stage before we make our final move. In a way this poem is about making changes to listen to the soul within one’s life.

I choose change or embrace change in order for new things to develop. I wrote this poem to myself and then I recorded myself reading it. I am not sure why but it has always been my desire and intention to read my poetry on this blog site. I have put it off for many years. It certainly isn’t my desire that you hear my voice in particular and I am pretty certain that there are people who can read a lot better than I can. My critical voice berates my spoken voice, my accent and the fact that even when I practice reading it several times I will creatively find another way of making a mistake. So the reading of this poem is not perfect but 2024 is the year for change. If I don’t try I will never grow. It can only get better; as I say to my husband when he break something down (in our house) before he rebuilds it.

The poem is directed to myself and I have set it to some photos and video footage of my husband walking along a river. Although some of the words might sound like I was talking to him, that is not so.

Here’s the written poem just in case you prefer reading to listening.

Stop Wait Listen Hear and Love – soul poem by Morag Noffke.

Stop... Wait...
Rushing from one thrill to the next,
Dopamine hit -
Life is transient.
What you treasure today
Is forgotten tomorrow.
All rubbish.
What is important today
is gone tomorrow.
Listen... Hear...
Appreciate what you have,
Who you are.
You don't need
Dopamine hits
To make you feel special.
Who you are
Is treasure enough.
You will look back
And remember.
Keep what's important.

Come away with me
Walk along brooks, burns, and streams.
Hear them gurgle, babble, laugh.
Hear the birds sing
And dogs barks.
Walk the paths of peace and gentleness.

Come away with me
Let your heart sigh
Let your breath slow down
In and slowly out
In and slow Lee out.

Stop wait listen hear

Stop the ego nonsense of busyness
Stop building walls and defenses
Stop building impressive nonsense
That will tumble down and rot
One day when you are too old to care.

Embrace your soul
Love, feed and delight.
Delight in who you really are
Behind the walls of busyness.
Maybe all you will find at first
Is a great big sadness;
Sad and lonely; maybe regretful.

But surely you will meet yourself
Within this sadness
And LOVE what's really there
Even if at first it is sadness.

Don't give up on yourself
Just because you don't know
The person looking back at you
In the mirror.

Love, love;
Love till you are nurtured back
To the true sense of who you
are meant to be.

Make the time to love You daily
Ask your soul who you
Want to connect with
And what you want to do.

Open your heart to Love.
Know you are nurtured.
It's time to be loved.

Soul Poem by Morag Noffke.

This is my plunge. What changes are asking to be made in your life?
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  1. A great post and poem, Morag. It is very wise to stop and reflect on who you are and what you have accomplished and hope to do. I enjoyed hearing you read your poem. It is the words that count not the mistakes! Keep up the good work!

  2. I think I prefer to listen than to read! Wow Morag, you have such a calm voice (I listened the first time while watching your video and a second time with my eyes closed … such beautiful words). I hope to hear more of your voice on your blog this year!
